Fading memories:
Two years after the first in a series of anthrax exposures we’re still waiting for the smallpox vaccine program to get going for first responders. And, there hasn’t been much discussion of cipro stockpiling by health officials. Maybe we no longer see bioterror as a domestic threat.

Pre 9/11, my first thought about bioterrorism was always, hey, we don't need bioterrorism -- we've already got such lousy conditions at our largely unregulated and uninspected meat packing plants that we can shoot ourselves in our own foot just fine without any help from anybody else.
Now I think they're about neck and neck in terms of future threat, but for bioterror to catch up to our shoddy food handling practices would take years of monthly attacks. Thousands of people end up in the hospital every year because of shoddy food handling, and some unlucky ones, usually kids or the elderly, end up dying from it.
Homeland security should start with some extra inspectors for the FDA, and committing to stopping operations at plants that routinely are found in violation but don't change. It's typical for some plants to get found in violation 3 or 4 times a year, remain open, and do nothing to fix their problems. Oh, wait, that's anti-business big government regulation, isn't it? Oops, my bad.
Jeez, I'm cranky. Think I need to eat lunch. Maybe a nice safe bowl of breakfast cereal.
