People's lack of taste never ceases to amaze me. We used to live in a Maryland neighborhood not unlike that Arlington neighborhood in the article (and not far from it, either). We bought a smallish bungalow and made it larger by expanding it with an architect's plan.

But in several nearby spots, the newer-is-better and bigger-is-better crowds tore down lovely bungalows and federals from the 1930s and put up cheesy, brass-hardware'd monsters from the cookie-cutter builder's catalog. Ugly houses that didn't fit in. Huge. Look-at-me big houses.

If I could describe these people as nouveau-riche without sounding like a complete f-ing snob, I would. I'll settle for unenlightenedly tasteless as the descriptor for most. Sad.
