False alarm:
There was some good first-hand, on the scene blog reporting on a car fire yesterday in Harvard Square from Randy Fenstermacher and Downbrigade with a wrap-up by Lisa Williams.
The initial suspicion that it was an explosion, combined with what looked like a MSM news blackout, heightened concerns over terrorism. And although it turned out to be nothing, the episode showed the power of bloggers to get the word out.

JJ, did you read something/hear something confirming it was a car fire? I've been poking around the local news outlets today and haven't found anything yet. Radio report? Other? I updated H2otown, too, to reflect this.

I did some checking and it looks like only a car fire.

JJ,
"I did some checking," implies you asked somebody, but you haven't said who. Are we supposed to just assume that these anonymous sources are in the know and forthright in revealing what they know? I was not extremely aggressive in questioning HUPD and CFD. I stuck my ear in as people asked them and they Sargent Schutlz'd it. Micheal, who is a trained journalist, was there earlier when there were more people to ask and was more aggressive about it. He got the same reply. I doubt that "the authorities" are in a hurry to tell what they do know, if anything. It is extremely hard to tell the difference between someone concealing knowledge and someone concealing ignorance.

While I'm not ready to read some kind of malfeasance, conspiracy, or coverup into this, I saw the fire too, and it seemed impossible that it could have just burst into flames the way it did just from an engine fire or from hitting the gate. And I am also wondering what "did some checking" means.

I'm pretty confident in it being a car fire. I've seen a few car fires and the photos seem to show typical damage. When they're happening, car fires are pretty dramatic: lots of flame and smoke and sometimes loud pops.
You can always call and ask. Call the Cambridge PD, Harvard PD, Fire Department, FBI, etc. And if you're not satisfied that they're telling you the truth, you can watch the buzz around security centers. Check to see if the car has been spirited away to a lab or merely towed to the wrecking lot. The plate is visible in one of the photos. Check with the limo company.
The bottom line is an Occam's Razor call. Sure it could be something more than it appears, but from my limited inquiries and the evidence at hand, I don't think so.
