If a tree falls...

Jay Rosen has thoughts and a wrap up of (and links to) others' reaction to the Times Select paid service. In a nutshell, since the blogosphere is bursting with free informed opinion, it doesn't make sense to put a premium price on something already in abundant supply.

Locally, has anyone seen a blog post about a Howie Carr column? Are Margery Eagan's opinions relevant to online conversations? No, and the point is that no one really has noticed or complained because there are plenty of alternative, linkable opinions out there. For Carr, Eagan and others, that's too bad because online discussions increase the relevance and value of good writers with unique ideas.

That's not to say that newspapers don't have things that people online will pay for. Someone will come up with a distribution model that works (there are a few interesting ideas in the Rosen post.) But the consensus is that Times Select isn't it.
