Ringin' it in:
Hey, giant paper mache puppets! What an original idea for the First Night parade.
Ah, but the kids seem to like them.
The party started in Copley Square...
And ended at the waterfront at midnight.
And everyone went home.
More First Night photos after the jump.
The Boston Public Library was animated with projection lights.
Scenes from the parade...
Santa waves a Puerto Rican flag.
And, above, a crowd favorite: the giant wind blown dry-cleaning bag.
As always, the theme was goofy hats.
Ice sculptures were everywhere. These are in Copley.
It was a night for junk food...
... including the traditional New Year's Eve chinese food dinner.
Revelers were scarce around Faneuil Hall early in the evening.
But as midnight approached, crowds hurried towards the waterfront.
The Custom Tower took a back seat to cell phones for counting down to midnight...
... when fireworks lit up the harbor.
And another crazy year was over.

Winter wonderland:
I took these photos early yesterday morning. Then I came home and inadvertently deleted them from the memory card. Using software from Media Recover, I was able to undelete them from the card.
A broken branch rests on the power wires.
Lines tangled in snow covered branches.

Christmas comes this time each year:
Here are the traditional "other side of Christmas," Christmas Eve photos, taken around the city last night.
The lights are burning in the jewelers building (left) to accommodate last minute shoppers in Downtown Crossing.
Stemin' Santa gives a thumbs-up outside Newbury Comics on Newbury Street.
A prize-winning display at Humboldt and Walnut Ave in Roxbury.
Not much open downtown, but a few people are out on Tremont Street. (For more photos click continue....)
On Warren Street in Roxbury, a makeshift sidewalk shopping mall appears each Christmas Eve.
A homeless guy takes a nap outside a convenience store near Park Street.
Another greets customers at the Store 24 in Fields Corner.
The light was good for night photos, with a moon showing through the clouds.
At Eldon and Washington Streets in Dorchester, a band set up on the sidewalk to entertain passersby with holiday music.
The tree in Grove Hall.
Flowers were available into the night at Columbia Road and Mass Ave.
A sign of vacant lot revival on Hollander Street in Roxbury. Only one problem. If you look close you can see the name of the Mayor promising the renewal: Kevin H. White.
A prize winning house display on Elm Hill Avenue.
The Phantom watched over the Theater District.
And finally, one employee was working late at the check cashing store at Mass and Tremont in the South End.
Have a happy Hanukah, merry Christmas, nice Kwanzaa and, for the rest of us, happy Festivus.

Snow event:
It was a cold, windy and snow-blown day around Boston yesterday as this photo in Franklin Field shows.
But we're lucky. All we have to contend with is the occasional noreaster. Lake effect snow is another story. Here's a satellite photo of a bad snow day around the Great Lakes.

MoMA:
While everyone else was shopping, I spent a few hours this morning in the renovated Museum of Modern Art in New York. I actually like a lot of this stuff, especially the photography and a lot of the mid 20th century paintings. But still, there's much to poke fun at.
A fan of Robert Ryman's Twin.
The things we do to impress women. A young couple admires Reinhardt's Abstract Painting 1960-1965
Edward Ruscha's OOF (next to Roy Lichtenstein's
Drowning Girl.)
Flag, by Jasper Johns.
Chagall's Me and my Village.
A big ole Jackson Pollack: One (Number 31)
Van Gogh's The Starry Night above on the wall, and below in full.
Last but not least, Hans Hofmann's Cathedral (which, the sharp eyed will notice, has been turned on it's side here)

Holiday spirit:
It was a little chilly in Midtown, but just about right for holiday sightseeing. I brought a new Panasonic Lumix camera to try out and took these photos earlier this evening.
Santa was out on 5th Ave.
And the chestnuts were roasting.
More Photos after the jump...
The front of Saks was festooned with snowflakes.
The tree at Rockefeller Center was lit and traffic backed up as tourists took photos.
Below, in the rink, some skaters just tried to stay on their feet, while others, more accomplished, tried out advanced moves.
A drummer boy stood over the rink...
And from a shop window, Marie Antoinette watched passersby.

Let it rain:
The rain backed up traffic on Dorchester Ave tonight.
And umbrellas were the order of the day in Upham's Corner.

Saturday Photos:
Going through old directories, I found a couple of photos to post; the first, a shot of two woman standing on a Barcelona sidewalk in an animated conversation; the second, a blind right hand shot out the passenger window as I was passing International Place, driving on the then elevated Central Artery.
